چکیده

We report the ®rst sub-wavelength mid-infrared images under water, and describe an application to obtaining images of single living cells in water using the Stanford Free Electron Laser (FEL). Spatial resolution is enhanced at the peak of infrared absorption of water. Images were obtained of single motile ®broblasts with the FEL wavelength tuned to absorption peaks of both protein and lipid molecules. Analysis of the unexpectedly strong absorption due to lipid molecules in motile ®broblasts suggests that the concentration of lipid molecules in lamellopodia is consistent with membrane ̄ow. An imaging dataset of cervical cells using scanning near-field optical microscopy coupled to an infrared free electron laser

Using a scanning near-field optical microscope coupled to an infrared free electron laser (SNOM-IR-FEL) in low-resolution transmission mode, we collected chemical data from whole cervical cells obtained from 5 pre-menopausal, non-pregnant women of reproductive age, and cytologically classified as normal or with different grades of cervical cell dyskaryosis. Imaging data are complemented by demo...

Fast quantification of water in single living cells by near-infrared microscopy.

We have set up a near-infrared microscope using a tuneable diode laser in the range from 1530 to 1570 nm. This spectral range is close to the peak of the water overtone absorption. We used this new microscope to study liver cells, hepatocytes, showing that quantitative information of the intracellular water concentration in living cells can be extracted.

Ultrafast supercontinuum fiber-laser based pump-probe scanning magneto-optical Kerr effect microscope for the investigation of electron spin dynamics in semiconductors at cryogenic temperatures with picosecond time and micrometer spatial resolution.

We describe a two-color pump-probe scanning magneto-optical Kerr effect microscope which we have developed to investigate electron spin phenomena in semiconductors at cryogenic temperatures with picosecond time and micrometer spatial resolution. The key innovation of our microscope is the usage of an ultrafast "white light" supercontinuum fiber-laser source which provides access to the whole vi...

Near - eld Analysis of Beam Properties of

We report mode structure and beam propagation analysis of high power strained (In,Ga)As quantum well lasers using the super-resolution capabilities of near-eld scanning optical microscopy (NSOM). We are able to directly measure the optical beam waist and astigmatism by imaging the output of the laser diode at various heights above the device facet. In the near-eld we observe spatial shifts in t...

Silicon-vacancy color centers in nanodiamonds: cathodoluminescence imaging markers in the near infrared.

We recently demonstrated [ 18 ] multi-color cathodoluminescence (CL) of nanodiamonds as a powerful tool for nanoscale imaging of biological structures. CL is the emission of light by matter as the result of electron bombardment. CL imaging of bulk matter is typically carried out in an electron microscope outfi tted with an optical detector, and is widely used in materials characterization. [ 19...
